St John’s Engineering Update |
|
‘The branch of technology which makes power and materials work for people. […] The field as a whole was traditionally subdivided into five main branches: civil, mechanical, mining and metallurgical, chemical and electrical engineering. The modern field has expanded, and the boundaries are not so clearly defined. Also, as each branch of engineering has become more specialized, new fields have developed, such as aeronautical, aerospace, computer, control, marine, nuclear, and systems engineering.’ The New Penguin Encyclopedia |

Ž Major work has been carried out in rooms 11C (Engineering Suite) and 38 (Graphics Room). Both rooms should be ready soon for students and community use. Ž Year 10 students took part in a Forensic Science activity at West Hatch. Ž ‘Girls into Engineering’ event held on 7th February gave some of our year 9 girls an excellent introduction to different aspects of Engineering and to try their skills in construction. Ž Link with The Department of Engineering at Queen Mary University of London has been established. We are in the process of organizing a visit for yr 10 students (GCSE PE option) to join their Sports Engineering team and increase knowledge on sport injuries. |

Materials Technology Experience at Cambridge University Six students from St John’s CoE School – a specialist Engineering College attended the recent Smallpeice Materials Technology Experience from 2nd to 5th January. The Smallpeice Trust presented this unique experience at the University of Cambridge, with the support of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. The course was designed to provide an insight into Materials Science as a subject in its own right and demonstrate the breadth of the field. Education Officer Thomas Elton from the Trust commented: “This type of experience is designed to give young people a feel of how exciting and rewarding the world of Materials Technology and engineering can be in real life. It was encouraging to see so many young people showing such enthusiasm, creativity and team work and produce high quality work.” |
